A journey into the industrial past

The old Forges du Pont d’Oye were once an important centre for the steel industry in the southern Ardennes. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the power of the river, the forests as fuel and the local iron ore were used to forge valuable products. The remains of this industrial past are scattered throughout the site and remain visible: ruined mills, old locks, remains of forges. They all bear witness to the harshness and innovation of the work at that time, as was the case here in Luxembourg.

At the edge of the lake, an information panel recalls this era and the last marquise of Pont d’Oye, a cultured and committed woman who left her mark on the estate in the 19th century and was committed to preserving the beauty of the place. Her name still seems to hover above the water, as if she were watching over this peaceful place.

Romantic walks and gastronomic pleasures

The lake itself is the heart of the estate. A walk around the water is a pleasure in any season, even when the sky is grey and damp (which was the case during our visit…). The landscape seems almost more poetic when mist covers the water and the trees sway gently in the wind. Families with children and hikers from the area gather on the forest trails; many dogs accompany their owners – always on a leash, which is very commendable – sniffing the trail and enjoying the peace and quiet. The gentle lapping of the waves, the rustling of the leaves and the soft light create an atmosphere that automatically invites contemplation.

One of the culinary highlights of our weekend was the meal at the charming restaurant Les Plats Canailles de la Bleue Maison, a pretty historic building overlooking the lake. In a comfortable and elegant setting, we enjoyed cuisine that was both refined and authentic. Carefully selected regional products are combined with creativity and respect for flavours. Here, everything invites you to savour the moment: delicious dishes, a glass of local wine and the view of nature… Pure pleasure!

Designer residence in a castle

We spent the night at the Château du Pont d’Oye, which stands majestically on the lake shore. This impressive 18th-century castle is currently undergoing a complete renovation to be transformed into an elegant designer residence: historic charm, tastefully decorated rooms, high ceilings, beautiful designer objects, quality materials, antique fireplaces and comfortable lounges that confidently showcase their past. The renovation focuses on sustainability and contemporary design that highlights the beauty of the old walls. The welcome is warm and attentive, but never intrusive, and you immediately feel welcome, as if you were a guest of good friends.

Picturesque villages and balm for the soul

The region around Habay, in Belgian Wallonia, near the Belgium-Luxembourg-France border triangle, also invites you to make other discoveries. Small picturesque villages such as Hautbellain, Anlier or historic Torgny, often considered one of the most beautiful villages in Belgium, are well worth a visit. Cobbled streets, old chapels, local craft shops and welcoming cafés characterise the landscape. In the surrounding area, there are also extensive hiking trails through forests and hills, which are ideal for picnics and bird watching. A great way to start the spring!
This weekend was ideal for recharging our batteries. Long walks, beautiful scenery, delicious cuisine and an exceptional location full of character make Les Forges du Pont d’Oye the perfect retreat. A place where you can find peace, even when the sky is grey… or perhaps especially then! And when it’s time to leave, you’re left with the pleasant feeling that you’ll always be welcome here.

TOP-RESTAURANTS UND “MEILLEURS OUVRIERS DE FRANCE”

Auch kulinarisch hat Metz viel zu bieten, besonders für Paare, die sich etwas gönnen möchten. Direkt im Museum gibt es das japanisch-französische Restaurant Umé & Yozora, das eine sehr feine, elegante Küche anbietet, ideal für ein romantisches Abendessen nach einem Museumsbesuch. Für ein romantisches Dinner empfiehlt sich Le Chat Noir (klassisch-gastronomisch) in ruhiger Lage, ideal für Paare.

Yozora, das einzige Restaurant mit Michelin-Stern in Metz (1 Stern), befindet sich im Centre Pompidou-Metz und wird von Küchenchef Charles Coulombeau geleitet. Mischung aus Frankreich und Japan, Omakase-Menü.

Das brandneue, von Philippe Starck designte Hotel Maison Heler bietet attraktive Wochenendangebote, besonders für Paare, die Komfort, Design und Ruhe schätzen. Zudem ist das Designhotel Maison Heler, entworfen von Philippe Starck, eine Attraktion für sich: ein modernes Turmgebäude, das oben mit einer Mini-Gotik-Villa abschließt, und ein Rooftop-Restaurant mit Panoramaaussicht.

Für entspannte Stunden in der Natur empfehle ich den Jardins Jean-Marie Pelt, auch bekannt als der Park der Seille. Der Park erstreckt sich über rund 20 Hektar, führt entlang der Seille, und ist eine perfekte grüne Oase für Spaziergänge, Picknicks oder ruhige Momente. Mit seinen Wiesen, Weinstöcken, Hopfen und Mirabellenbäumen verbindet er Natur und Stadtraum sehr harmonisch.

Ein Kurzwochenende in Metz lohnt sich vor allem zur Weihnachtszeit: Die Stadtbeleuchtung, die festlichen Dekorationen und der intime Weihnachtsmarkt schaffen eine warme, weniger touristische Atmosphäre als andere große Weihnachtsmärkte in Frankreich. Für alle Kunst- und Architekturfans bietet sich gerade jetzt, zum Jahresende, eine wunderbare Gelegenheit, diese gemütliche Stadt bei ruhigen Spaziergängen und feinem Essen neu zu entdecken.
